What is a Firewall?

A firewall is the network security device for monitoring and filtering, the incoming and outgoing network traffic. The fire-wall control the traffic on the basis of already determined security policies of the organization. In simpler words, it acts like a barrier between a private internal network and the public network. The fire-wall mainly serves the purpose of allowing the harmless traffic in and keeps the harmful traffic out.

Firewall history

The firewalls were invented in late 1980’s, as packet filters. Earlier these work as networks that were set up to check the packets or bites being transferred between the computers. That packet fire-wall are also in use but there is a development in the fire-walls.

Firewall history

i- Gen 1 Virus:

Generation 1, in late 1980’s there was an attack of virus on stand-alone PCs and affect the business, resulting in the invention of anti-virus products.

ii- Gen 2 Networks:

Generation 2, in mid 1990’s there was an attack from internet that affected the business is and consequently, Firewall was invented.

iii- Gen 3 applications:

Generation 3, in early 2000’s, there were harmful things in the applications, that had a bad impact on the businesses and Intrusion Prevention Systems Products ( IPS) were invented.

iv- Gen 4 Payload:

Generation 4, in about 2010, unknown polymorphic attacks affected the businesses, to solve such problems, anti-bot and sandboxing products were invented.

v- Gen-5 Mega:

Generation 5, almost in 2017, multi-vectors mega attacks by the means of advance attack tools what happening on large scales, and resulted in the invention of advance threat prevention solutions.

The first stateful inspection Firewall was invented in 1993. It is capable of fighting with the cyber attacks. Now-a-days, fire-walls are advanced and have many functions and qualities with built-in features. Now, Next Generation Fire-walls and Network Fire-walls are also present. The built-in features of the Fire-walls are:

i- Network threat prevention.
ii- Application and Identity-Based control.
iii- Hybrid Cloud Support.
iv- Scalable Performance.

Types of Firewalls

There are five types of fire-walls that perform important functions and have vital importance in the enterprises.

Packet filtering Firewalls:

In packet filtering Firewalls, routers and switches are the devices that perform their functions. This type works inline at junction points. These are not meant for routing the packets, instead they allow the comparison of every received packet to the set of predetermined criteria such as the allowed IP address, packet type, port number, and other aspects of the packet protocol header. The packets that are tagged as troublesome are dropped, it means they are stopped from getting forward. Therefore, they cannot cause any trouble.

Packet filtering Firewalls advantages:

The packet fire-walls advantages are as follows:
i- Only a single device is enough for filtering traffic of the whole network.
ii- A scanning of traffic is really efficient and rapid.
iii- They are not expensive.
iv- They have a minimum effect on other resources, network performances and end-user experiences.

Packet filtering Firewalls disadvantages:

i- The packet filtering has less context because it is dependent upon the IP addresses or port information.
ii- it has high risk of spoofing, because it does not check the payload.
iii- it is not suitable for everything network.
iv- Setting up and managing the access control lists may not be easy.
The packet filtering firewall provides low security that may not be enough for some cases. However, you can choose them for their low cost. They can provide the security to the small business and the low budget organisations, against some known threats. In larger enterprises, this type of filtering is visible as a part, in internal departments.

2- Circuit-level gateway:

The Circuit-level gateway is comparatively faster of identifying the harmful content. They are able of monitoring TCP handshake and other network protocol session initiation messages between the networks. These firewalls have an establishment between the local and remote host, to identify that, is the initiated session is legitimate or not? Is it trusted or not? However, they are not able for the inspection of packets.

Circuit-level gateway advantages:

i- These process only allowed transactions, rejecting the others.
ii- Their set up and management is easy.
iii- They hava a lower cost and lowest impact on end-user experiences.

Circuit-level gateway disadvantages:

i- They do not provide protection against the data leakage from devices within the Firewalls, if they are not paired up with other security technology.

ii- These do not monitor application layer.

iii- Ongoing updates are required for keeping the rules current.
Circuit-level gateway provides more protection than the packet filtering firewalls, but if used with the other systems. For instance, these are used with application-level gateways. This allows a more effective filtering.

Application-level gateways:

Application-level gateways are commonly known as the proxy and sometimes known as the proxy firewall. It performs the function of allowing the entry in the network and exit from the network. These are capable of filtering the packets not only according to the intended services which are specified by the destination port, but also by some other features, like the HTTP request string.
These firewalls provide a significant data security. It is difficult to manage them.
Application-level gateways advantages:

i- These are able for examining the communications across the outside sources and the other devices behind the firewalls. They not only check the address, port and TCP header information but it also checks the content. And then allows to enter in the proxy.

ii- It also ensures the fine-grained security. It means it may allow to open the website, but it very restrict the user to open the pages on the website.

iii- Provide the protection from anonymous users.

Application-level gateways disadvantages:

i- It can prohibit the network performances.

ii- They hey have a high cost.

iii- It requires a lot of effort for its performance.
iv- It is not able to work with all the network protocols.

State-ful inspection Firewall:

The stateful inspection Firewall examines the each packet as well as it also determines that, is the particular packet is a part of established TCP or other network session. It ensure the higher security than the other fire-walls but effects the network performances.
Multi-layer inspection fire-wall is variety of stateful inspection Fire-wall. It monitors transactions which are in process between the multiple protocol layers.

Stateful inspection firewall advantages:

i- It is able of monitoring the complete session and also checks the IP address and payloads.

ii- No need of many ports to open for the allowance of in and out of traffic.

iii- Able of delivering substantive capabilities of logging.
They provide a lot of security to the enterprise.

Next-generation firewall:

Normally a NGFW works together with stateful inspection for inspecting the packets. It also works by including deep packet inspection (DPI) and other network security systems like IDS/IPS, malware filtering and antivirus.
DPI inspects the actual data carried by the packet.
NGFW advantages:

i- It works by combining DPI with malware filtering and some other controls to ensure the maximum filtering.

ii- It stats tracking the traffic from layer 2 and take it to the application layer and provides accurate insights.

iii- It is able to be updated automatically.

These fire-walls are best suited for the highly regulated industries like financial and healthcare. They produce optimal results by combining with the other security systems.

What do firewalls do?

The Fire-walls protects your computer against the cyber attacks. The Fire-walls act as a sheild for the malicious and unnecessary network traffic. They also prevent the computers from the harmful data that approaches through internet.
